In short

JM Performance is an ECU remapping specialist and VASS tuning workshop at 14 Blackstaff Road, Kircubbin, Newtownards BT22 1AQ, on the Ards Peninsula. We specialise in the Volkswagen Audi Group platforms — Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Škoda — and work on every other make of car, van and light commercial too. Services include custom Stage 1 and Stage 2 maps, economy maps, DSG and TCU gearbox tuning, DPF and AdBlue diagnostics. Work is carried out at the workshop or, if it suits you better, at your home or workplace through our mobile remapping service across County Down. Most jobs take 60–120 minutes while you wait, and every original file is archived so your vehicle can be returned to stock free of charge.

What we do

Tuning & diagnostic services

Every map is written for your specific vehicle after a full diagnostic read — no generic files pulled off a shelf.

Stage 1 ECU remap

A calibration for a completely standard vehicle. Sharper throttle, stronger mid-range and more usable torque where you actually drive. Typically 20–35% more power on turbocharged engines.

60–90 mins · Stock hardware

Stage 2 ECU remap

For vehicles with supporting hardware such as an upgraded intercooler, intake or exhaust. Calibrated around your exact setup with live data logging to keep everything inside safe limits.

2–3 hrs · Requires mods

Economy remap

Torque delivered lower in the rev range so you change up earlier and sit in a taller gear. Popular with vans, reps and anyone doing serious motorway miles. Typically 8–15% better mpg.

60–90 mins · Diesel & petrol

DPF diagnostics & regeneration

Pressure and temperature sensor testing, soot and ash load readings, forced regeneration and on-car cleaning. We find the root cause rather than just clearing the light.

Road-legal repair

AdBlue & SCR diagnostics

NOx sensor testing, injector and pump faults, quality sensor errors and countdown-to-no-start warnings. Proper fault finding on SCR systems before parts get thrown at it.

Road-legal repair

Gearbox (TCU) tuning

DSG, S-tronic, ZF and PowerShift calibration. Faster shifts, raised torque limiters to match your engine map, revised lock-up and launch behaviour.

Auto boxes only

Mobile remapping

The full workshop service at your home or workplace. Same tools, same diagnostic health check, same 30-day guarantee — we just bring it to your driveway instead.

Across County Down

Van & fleet tuning

Transit, Sprinter, Crafter, Transporter, Vivaro and Ducato. Economy maps for running costs, speed limiter adjustment where legally permitted, and volume pricing for multiple vehicles.

Multi-vehicle pricing

Diagnostics & fault finding

Full system scan, live data, actuator tests and freeze-frame analysis. Useful when a garage has been guessing — you get a written summary of what we found and what it needs.

A note on emissions equipment: removing or disabling a DPF, EGR or SCR system on a road-registered vehicle is an MOT failure and an offence under the Road Vehicles (Construction & Use) Regulations. We diagnose and repair these systems properly. Off-road and competition-only vehicles are a separate conversation — ask us.

Can't get to us?

Mobile remapping available

If getting the car to Kircubbin is awkward, we'll come to you instead. Same equipment, same process, same guarantee — just on your driveway rather than ours.

We turn up with the full kit, run the diagnostic health check first exactly as we would at the unit, read and archive your original file, then write and road test the new one. Most remaps take 60 to 90 minutes start to finish.

All we need is somewhere safe for the vehicle to sit with the engine able to run — a driveway, a work car park, a yard. Home or workplace, whichever suits.

  • Across the Peninsula & County Down — send your postcode and we'll confirm.
  • Evenings and weekends — by arrangement, if that's easier around work.
  • Identical process — health check, original file saved, road tested before we leave.
  • Same 30-day guarantee — not happy, we revert it and refund.

Our speciality

VASS specialist

Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Skoda — they share engines, gearboxes and ECUs across the whole group. Knowing those platforms properly is the difference between a map that works and a map that just makes numbers.

We work daily on EA189 and EA288 diesels, EA211 and EA888 petrols, and DQ250, DQ381 and DL382 gearboxes — the engines and boxes fitted to almost every Golf, A3, Leon, Octavia, Passat, Tiguan, Transporter and Superb on the road here.

Every other make is welcome and gets exactly the same process. The VASS experience just means that on those cars we already know where the limits are before we start.

About

Built on files, not guesswork

JM Performance started the way most good workshops do — one person, a laptop and a reputation to protect. Every vehicle that comes through gets the same process: full health check, original file read and archived, custom calibration written for that engine, then road testing and data logging before it's handed back.

We tune with genuine, industry-standard hardware for full OBD and bench read/write access across nearly every modern petrol and diesel platform. That matters — cheap clone tools are how ECUs get bricked.

If a vehicle isn't a good candidate for tuning, we say so before you spend anything. A worn turbo, a slipping clutch or a stretched timing chain needs sorting first, and no map will hide it.

Reviews

Early days, and honest about it

JM Performance is a new business. It has been busy from the start, but we would rather show you nothing than show you something we made up.

Real reviews go here as they come in, word for word, good and bad. Nothing edited, nothing invented.

If we have worked on your car, a couple of lines on Google genuinely helps a new workshop more than you would think — and it tells the next person what to expect.

FAQ

Straight answers

What is an ECU remap?

An ECU remap is a rewrite of the software inside your engine control unit. We read your vehicle's original file, adjust the calibration tables that govern fuelling, boost pressure, ignition timing and torque limiters, then write the modified file back. Manufacturers set these conservatively to cover poor fuel, skipped servicing and extreme climates worldwide. A remap recovers that headroom for the conditions you actually drive in.

How much power will my car gain?

Turbocharged diesels typically gain 25–35% more power and a similar rise in torque. Turbocharged petrols usually gain 20–30%. Naturally aspirated engines gain far less — around 5–8% — because there is no boost to adjust, though throttle response improves noticeably. Enter your registration above for guide figures specific to your engine.

Is remapping safe for my engine?

Yes, when it's done properly on a healthy vehicle. We stay inside the manufacturer's safe limits for exhaust gas temperature, cylinder pressure and boost, and we log the car under load before handing it back. The risk comes from bad files written blind or from tuning a vehicle that already has a mechanical fault. That's why every job starts with a diagnostic health check.

Will a remap affect my warranty?

It can. A manufacturer may refuse a warranty claim on the engine, turbo, clutch or gearbox if they detect modified software. Most modern ECUs log a checksum or write count, so it is usually detectable even after a return to stock. If your vehicle is still under manufacturer warranty, weigh that up carefully — we're happy to talk it through honestly rather than tell you what you want to hear.

Do I need to tell my insurer about a remap?

Yes. A remap is a modification and must be declared to your insurer. Failing to declare it can invalidate your policy and leave a claim unpaid. In practice many insurers charge little or nothing for a Stage 1 map on a standard vehicle, but the declaration has to be made. We'll give you written details of the work for your insurer.

How long does a remap take?

Most Stage 1 and economy remaps take 60 to 90 minutes from arrival to road test. Stage 2 calibrations, gearbox tuning and anything requiring the ECU to be removed for bench work take two to three hours. If we're coming to you, you can carry on with your day while we work.

Will a remap improve my fuel economy?

It can, but only if your driving style stays the same. An economy map delivers torque lower in the rev range so you can change up earlier and hold a taller gear, which typically returns 8–15% better mpg on diesels doing steady motorway or commuting miles. If you use the extra power, you'll use more fuel — that's just physics.

Do you specialise in particular makes?

Yes. JM Performance is a VASS specialist — Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Škoda, plus Cupra. Those four brands share engines, gearboxes and ECU hardware across the group, so we work daily on EA189 and EA288 diesels, EA211 and EA888 petrols and DQ250, DQ381 and DL382 gearboxes. Every other make is welcome and follows exactly the same process.

Do you offer mobile remapping?

Yes. We offer mobile ECU remapping across the Ards Peninsula and County Down, using the same equipment we use at the workshop. We come to your home or workplace, run the same diagnostic health check first, and most remaps take 60 to 90 minutes on your driveway. All we need is somewhere safe for the vehicle to sit with the engine able to run. Send us your postcode and we will confirm availability.

Where is the workshop and do I need to leave the car?

We are at 14 Blackstaff Road, Kircubbin, Newtownards BT22 1AQ, on the Ards Peninsula between Greyabbey and Portavogie, with off-road parking on site. Most jobs are done while you wait, so you can bring the car in and take it away the same visit. If getting to us is awkward, we also offer a mobile service and can come to your home or work instead.

Can my car be returned to standard?

Yes. Your original ECU file is read and archived before any changes are made, and we keep it indefinitely. If you're selling the vehicle, going in for warranty work, or simply don't get on with the map, we'll write the original file back free of charge.

Does a remap affect my MOT?

A properly written remap does not cause an MOT failure. Emissions must still fall within the limits for your vehicle, and a good map is calibrated to do exactly that. What does cause a failure is removing or disabling emissions equipment such as a DPF, EGR or SCR system — which we do not do on road-registered vehicles.

How much does a remap cost?

Pricing depends on the vehicle, the ECU type and whether the work can be done through the OBD port or needs bench access. Stage 1 and economy maps for common cars and vans sit at the lower end; Stage 2, gearbox tuning and bench jobs cost more. Enter your registration above or send us your details and we'll give you a fixed price before you commit to anything.

Where do your customers travel from in County Down?
